The Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method (DLS) DLS Method is a mathematical formulation designed to calculate the target score for the team batting second in a limited-overs cricket match interrupted by weather or other circumstances.

The DLS method is the invention of statisticians Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis. In the name of these two guys, this method is popular as the Duckworth Lewis method.

How does this DLS method work?

So today I will explain to you How the DLS method works? So in this vid, I will briefly explain it…..and I will put the stat of AUS vs Ban and Aus vs NewZelandin front of you so please watch this video till the end after today whenever DLS Method will come into play you will understand well the whole procedure of DLS.

Explain DLS Method with an example

So let’s get started firstly let me explain DLS with an example there is an ODI match A ODI match is of 50 overs a team set a target of 300and then it rains and the target gets reduced to 192 in 25 overs but we think when the overs is 50% reduced then why the target is not reduced by 50%? So for this, which factor comes into play will explain this over get reduced the target further reduced all done with DLS method there are two basic things we have to keep resources in mind which is used in DLS Method 1st one is Overland 2nd is wickets in hand these two resources matters now let a team is playing its 1st Inning and set a target of 300 Now it rains and overs get reduced.

For example, the 2nd Inning is of 25 overs the resource of overs gets reduced by 50% So what will be the TARGET now? Is it 151 runs for a win now?

NO! We will get more than 151 runs as a target because wicket in hand will come in play 1st team plays 50 overs with 10 wickets in hand they keep in mind that they have 10 wickets in hand to play the whole 50 overs but the 2nd team has to play fewer overs because of rain with the same 10 wickets they can play freely and they can win that is why wicket resource is very important friends so now you will get a target of more than 151 runs How much more?

I will explain it with this example team A starts its inning of 50 overs with keep in mind that they have a full 50 overs they start slowly and build their inning and keep their wicketsTeam B comes in for chase and they know that they have to play only 30 overs they play freely so they feel less fear of losing wickets because of fewer overs now what is TARGET and PAR score?

Target and Par score are not the same targets is the one which a batting team sets for the opponent team in a set overseas score is changed over by over…..let a team batting 2nd and it rains in 22nd over and par score is 115 and if their score is 116they win but here wicket matters if they are 116/2 they are in winning position Butbut if they are 116/3 or 116/4 the par score will change now I will two examples of original ODI matches how PAR score get changed? Here is the answer recently there is a match b/w AUS vs BAN which was affected by Rain Bangladesh batted first in this match and set a target of 183 runs now let if rain comes before AUS starts their chase the target should be 109 in 20 overs just because BAN have 50 overs to complete their innings now AUS have fewer overs to play but they have same no. of wickets which is 10 so the overs reduced by 60% the match is now 20 over the target will not reduce by 60% it will be 109 for AUS SO now let us assume AUS start their original chase of 183 and the rain comes in 20 overs am taking 20 overs because a match needs to be played 20 overs to be finished ok now rain comes at 20so now is the target at 20 of 109 will be same?

NO! Now PAR score will come in playas the rain comes after the inning starts so the PAR score will be 48/1if they are 48/1if they lose more than 2 wickets the PAR score will be more because AUS keep in mind of 50 overs183 in 50 overs with 10 wickets in hand but rain comes in the mid-inning that is why target in 20 overs and PAR score in same overs is different if the rain does not come so AUS can win this match easily because they have wickets in hand that is why PAR score is so much less and the batting teams recent performance also play a big role what is Mid Inning interruptions?

Now, what happens if rain comes in the mid of the first inning and overs get reduced then how does DLS work? there are three things which keep in mind the first thing is how many overs reduced because of rain?

Secondly, the stage of innings is the middle o inning or last phase of the inning, and the last one is wickets in hand if a team loses 7 or 8 wickets then how many overs remaining does not matter so these three things are important to adjust the target.

How is DLS method calculated?

So recently there was a match of AUS vs NZ in CT 2017 which called of because of rain NZ batted firstin the mid of the inning rains comes and the overs get reduced to 46 overs an inningbut the main thing is rain comes at 9.3 oversso NZ has 36.3 overs left to bat after rainand they have 9 wickets in handso they have a lot of time to readjust their inningso the target did not changed for AUS NZ make 291 runs in their 1st inning AUS gets the target of 292 Why do wicket in hands matter?so assume a team starts its first inning and rain comes at 20thoverso they were 80/6 after 20 overso they lost their 60% of wicketsin 40% of overs means in 20 overs out of 50so the 6 wickets are ofbiously top orders wicketsand the remaining batsmen are ofbiously bowlersso assume the match is of 30 overs nowso now the team has only 10 overs to batwith 4 wickets in handso now yhe will have less fear of loosing wicketsso now the target the team will setthe target will not increase neither it will be samethe target will now reducedby around 20%so friends i hope you can understand DLS method better now you can understand it better.
